Liskeard Stronghold


Castle Park in Liskeard marks the site of a fortified medieval manor house built in the early thirteenth century by Richard, Earl of Cornwall. Although often referred to as a castle, it was probably not a major military stronghold. It was more likely a high status manorial complex, with a great hall, private chambers, a chapel, and enclosing walls. Its position above the town reflected authority, status, and control within the medieval landscape. Liskeard grew in importance during the medieval period. It was granted borough status in 1240 and became one of Cornwall’s five Stannary towns in 1307. This meant it had a role in the administration of the tin industry, which was central to Cornwall’s economy. The manor at Castle Park may have been connected with legal, administrative, and commercial activity, as well as with the local authority of the Earl of Cornwall. Over time, the manor declined. By the mid sixteenth century, accounts described the so called castle as ruinous, with little more than fragments and heaps of stone remaining. By the seventeenth century, the surviving buildings had been adapted for other purposes, including use as a schoolhouse and a local court venue. This reuse shows how the site remained useful to the town long after its original manorial role had faded. The site continued to change in later centuries. A grammar school operated there until the nineteenth century, after which parts of the site were used as a prison and police residence. In the early twentieth century, the area was landscaped with trees and paths and became a public park. During the Second World War, a Royal Observer Corps post was built there, followed later by a Cold War nuclear monitoring bunker, adding modern military history to the site’s earlier medieval layers. Today, little of the medieval manor survives above ground, but the shape of the park and the surrounding streets still reflect its historic importance. Old boundary lines, changes in level, and fragments of stone suggest buried remains beneath the surface.
